Julian Brazier MP, Shadow Ports Minister, visits Falmouth

JULIAN BRAZIER MP, the Shadow Minister for Ports, today (January 26th) joined local campaigner Sarah Newton in her continued efforts to secure support for the future of the port of Falmouth.

Julian and Sarah met with Harbour Commissioners and Captain Mark Samson, management at A&P as well as Jonathan Griffin, Chairman of the Falmouth Town Forum.

Speaking after the visit, Julian Brazier said: “I am impressed with the port operations in Falmouth. It is clear to me that the port of Falmouth is pivotal to the whole Cornish economy and has national strategic importance as the largest and most westerly harbour in Britain.

“It has a vital role to play in supporting the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

“I listened very carefully and sympathetically to the arguments in favour of dredging and am surprised that the preservation of such a small quantity of calcified seaweed is having such an impact on the decision-making process and the cost of the project.

“I will be taking this back to London and hope to be in a position, after the General Election, to support the aspirations of Falmouth.”

Sarah Newton, who is also the Conservative Prospective MP for Truro & Falmouth said: “I am delighted that Julian made the time to visit Falmouth, along with Julian Lewis, Shadow Defence Minister, Mark Prisk MP Shadow Minister for Business and the Shadow Environment and Climate Change team.

“They have all seen first hand the potential and importance of Falmouth.

“I will continue to work hard with colleagues locally and nationally to secure the future of our harbour and port.”
