 | Parking charges to be frozen for the first hour |
 |
The Conservative Group on Cornwall Council are delighted that the Parking Policy Advisory Panel has agreed to recommend to Cabinet that the charge for the first hour of parking be frozen for now at its current rate.
There is to be an increase in parking charges across Cornwall in April as a part of a series of urgent measures being undertaken by the new Conservative/Independent administration to get the Council’s finances back under control due to the costs of going unitary, but at the same time seeking to protect frontline services. It is very regrettable that any increase is necessary.
To reduce the impact of this on short stay parking the Conservative group asked the Parking Policy Advisory Panel to freeze first hour parking across Cornwall at its current rate. This proposal was accepted by the Panel and will now be considered by Cabinet.
This is a small part of a much bigger piece of work being undertaken by the Conservative Group. For example, the group is examining whether the long term proposal of Council officers to ‘rationalise’ parking charges into a small number of bands really makes sense. This looks tidy but has a number of drawbacks- in particular it fails to take account of local conditions across Cornwall in a meaningful way.
