Water charges in the South West under discussion

SIAN FLYNN, the prospective Conservative MP for North Cornwall, has this week met with senior managers at South West Water in Exeter to discuss the independent Walker Report which specifically addressed some of the serious concerns in the South West about the level of water charges.

Speaking after the meeting, Sian said: “The price local people pay for water in the South West has been raised regularly at surgeries, in discussions, through surveys and in and correspondence with constituents.

“Whilst acknowledging that work that South West Water has done to rectify decades of under funding before privatisation of water, there is a very real concern about the high level of water charges in the South West.

“Many people feel a strong sense of injustice about what they are having to pay, with 3% of the population paying to maintain 30% of the country’s coastline.’

“Along with my colleagues in Cornwall, I welcome the independent report, which has clarified the issues and made a number of recommendations to be considered to look at a way forward.  I’m pleased that South West Water is now in discussions with OFWAT to look at some practical ways of addressing the issues.”

During her meeting at the company’s headquarters, Sian also raised a number of other issues on behalf of constituents.

Sian said: “I’ll always do my best to respond to concerns raised with me, and where necessary to take them forward at the highest level.

“Of necessity, many of these are private matters.  This was a useful meeting at South West Water, and if I’m the MP for North Cornwall following the election, will look forward to working constructively with this important company on behalf of North Cornwall’s residents.”
