Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers has encouraged people across Cornwall to head to a nearby beach this weekend and join the fight against plastic waste and other litter.
The Big Clean, organised by South West Conservatives, will see MPs, councillors and volunteers lead or join more than 20 events at hotspots across the region on Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September.
It follows the hugely successful launch of The Big Beach Clean last year.
There are two beach cleans in Cornwall – at Perranporth on Friday (11.30am to 1pm) and at Long Rock, Penzance, on Sunday (1pm).
Theresa Villiers said: “The South West is renowned for its beautiful beaches, countryside and open spaces.
“Unfortunately, this beauty is spoiled and wildlife is put at risk by a thoughtless few who leave plastic waste and other litter.
“The Big Clean is an excellent campaign and I congratulate all organisers and volunteers for their efforts to bring communities together, protect the environment and change the mindset of those who blight it.
“Please join an event near you this weekend and play your part in the mission to leave the environment in a better state than we found it.”
Peter Booth, the Cornwall-based chairman of South West Conservatives, is leading the regional campaign and plans to join as many events as he can.
He said: “Following the huge success of The Big Beach Clean in September 2018, when over 400 volunteers of all ages took part in events across the South West, we were keen to extend this year’s campaign to include parks and open spaces.
“The South West is full of stunning scenery and it’s so frustrating when it’s tarnished by a selfish minority who leave litter.
“These events are a fun way to help the local community and preserve our beautiful countryside – and we’d be delighted to welcome local people who are able to spare some time.”
Bags, gloves and litter-pickers will be provided in some locations, but people are encouraged to bring their own where possible.
